Principal for the day

annoucements

P and the VP

hall duty

My six year old daughter Kaitlyn was awarded the esteemed privilege of earning the title and function as principal for the day at her school and today she reported for duty. She had participated in a planned meeting with the principal earlier in the month making important decisions about her day in charge including a no homework policy, the dress code would be pyjamas and she would give away two webkinz in a poster contest for the best drawing of her. She was also entitled to a McDonald's lunch and could choose a vice principal to help her during the day. As mother of the principal I volunteered to drop off lunch for my princess...I mean principal and her vice principal. Ms. Lomuto had promised a busy day with some mock issues so when I met Katie in the office at lunch it was no wonder she look exhausted. She complained that she had to do yard duty, take a phone call, deal with a disciplinary issue, and tell a teacher for a third time that morning that "NO" they couldn't get a raise. Wishing her well I told her I would see her at home time but thinking to myself that she may not make it to lunch recess!! Thank you to Ms. Lomuto for making her students apart of their school community and giving them a taste of the real world!

looking back...

In the fall of 1994, my husband met a tall and loud curly head Portuguese student in law school who went by the name.....Jay..he was in my husband's section and therefore Brian saw him on a daily basis in the lecture halls and lunchroom... even though Brian tried desperately to avoid him. Jay was a character, loud somewhat obnoxious and joked non-stop with the ladies....which meant that my newly married husband who was soon to be a dad didn't want this single guy as a friend. Besides he didn't think that Jay was bright and wondered how he had made it into law school! But on a cold day in November, the day after I gave birth to my first child Justin, my husband needed a favor from this character Jay. ..you see Jay was one of the few students who had a car and my husband suddenly found himself without a ride to the hospital to see me....our Honda wouldn't start, the battery and alternator needed replacing and we were starving students ourselves and new parents...the dealership would have to wait...and Brian asked Jay for a lift. This ride changed the entire course of both Jay's life and our new little family even though we didn't know it at the time. He gladly drove Brian and was happy to help a fellow law student in need even if Brian never paid much attention to him until that day. We learned that Jay was the type of person who would give his shirt off his back to someone else if they asked and hence gave Brian a ride. He told us he came from a modest immigrant family and struggled to get to law school. He was working a factory job in Hamilton driving a forklift. His parents were happy with his existence and insisted that he was set secure in a career with good money to provide his own future. Jay had a large family but was the oldest boy with a photographic memory and the ability to do well in school without even trying. He aced the entrance tests to law school and had to convince his dad that going to university would be better than dogging it out everyday in the factory. His dad was pessimistic and Jay found that he would have to make it on his own in law school. We soon relied on Jay for more rides. He became a study buddy for Brian and won the heart of my baby.I adored Jay for when he came to our house all he wanted to do was play on the floor with Justin. Brian's first impression of him as loud was true......but he was just a big kid who loved life and was happy to share that with all that knew him. Over the next 2 years of law school, our family saw Jay regularly and he became part of our law school years so much so that when I moved back to Toronto to resume my insurance broker career, Brian and Jay became room-mates. The relationship continued . We saw graduation together, the knock-down but get up again article year from hell, birthday parties, a wedding and divorce for Jay, partnership at the firm, and then another wedding and a baby shower.

Fast forward 15 years to yesterday... when I held Jay's beautiful newborn baby girl Chloe in my arms and remembered Jay's kindness that night and thankful that fate brought him to us ....and in return I found him a wife ( a true story) ..... and now he too has a baby to hold and love as we did 15 short years ago!

Love you Jay forever!

P.S A notable mention goes out to Lucy's sister Veronica....without her, I would not have been apart of this beautiful ending.

boys...

Jamie's team, and his coach Bato... meeting Olympian Jason Burnett..

Its funny...I never thought that one of my boys would be involved in a sport that is probably considered girlish by most people's standards and here I find myself admiring my middle child who dedicates 8-10 hours a week at the gym flipping on the floor, rings, trampoline and bars...Brian was convinced that hockey was the sport of choice for the boys and it turns out that my little Jamie showed us exactly what HE is passionate about and has proven that if you expose your kids to all activities...THEY will FIND the right fit ....so as we support our kid....I smile at the fact that we were taught a lesson....kids can be great teachers if we just let them ...

P.S Out of those 8 boys...only Jamie has moved up to the pre-competitive boys team! GO JAMIE!

announcing....

BABY CHLOE

She came into this world on a cold and snowy morning in Toronto. Her parents delighted that she arrived safe, healthy and happy. They had been praying for this day for some time now and had endured many struggles to get to this wonderful moment. Congratulations Jay and Lucy, you have no idea how little Chloe will capture your heart and change you both forever!!! Fall in love and never look back!

hockey....again...

My husband is convinced that he is still 17 and plays hockey three times a week. Here's proof.....the goalie doesn't have a chance!! He scored!!! Guess I should be happy...at least he is not bothering me those nights!!! lol

Jamie turned 10

Another monumental birthday for one of my kids. To know Jamie is to understand his middle child quirkiness...he is aloof yet loving, he is independent but will take a cuddle when no one is looking and he is mature....Justin always gets mad that his friends like hanging with Jamie..so when it comes to birthday parties...Jamie is not doing that...he announces every year that he doesn't want me to spend money but more importantly...he really is not into the kids at school...he has 2 good friends and a best friend who incidentally left the school after thanksgiving...nothing like your kid coming home from school with that face...and you ask..." you look like you lost your best friend....and he did!!"..yep that's exactly how it went down!!....anyways....being a January baby and having a brother 5 years older puts you in a different friend category according to my son.....he just gets along with older kids....who don't DO birthday parties....but I convinced Jamie that maybe this year we could just have his friends come by for some pizza and Dad will take them to laser quest..and then maybe...just maybe...I might happen to have a cake with his name on it...and a few candles on fire.......( a mother's way of disguising what's really going on---can you say birthday party)...so Jamie agreed and as those boys are out at laser quest....I smile quietly to myself happy that he is enjoying his 10th birthday party!!

Update...thanks little birdie...

I was given a friendly reminder today that ..maybe just maybe... its time to update my blog ... .so here it goes...and hopefully I will be on a roll again...

Katie is my youngest...she is my third child and has two older brothers.....so when I asked her if she wanted to have a tea party she jumped at the chance to act all girlie. We made hot chocolate with milk and found some day old crackers. Pink bear sat in on the party and she learned how to hold her pinky while sipping pretend tea....I tried my British accent on her..asking her to act ladylike... and before I knew it she was spilling her milk down the front of her shirt and singing silly songs....I took the video camera out to catch her in action...and had to cut the video short to stop myself from dropping the camera from laughter.....she can be a character...must be the older brothers influence...well so much for manners and acting like a lady.....but she will do just fine in this world because she just doesn't take herself too seriously....hope it makes you laugh!!
